The suggestions provided by other posters make sense, but still, to answer to the first question, for anyone (googling until here and) having the same problem while installing RHL 9 (or any old system) on VirtualBox: VB automatically creates a SCSI disk, but in the properties of the machine it's possible to remove it and replug it in as an IDE disk: this will work, and you will be able to install in text mode.
